About two years ago, I began the odyssey of building
a GT-4 911RSR clone for PCA club racing. Our little team consists primarily
of myself, and fellow Porsche enthusiasts Warren Hamilton of Bath, N.Y.
and my brother Kevin Maehling of Mt. Lebanon, Pa. Of course, many others
have helped along the way! We began with a 1972T from Ohio, which I dragged
home and gutted. We have been selling the various bits that were not required
for racing over the internet and at swap meets. As if I weren't in deep
enough, we found an abandoned race car project in N.Y. which I also dragged
home. These photos will allow you to follow this saga as we build a silk
purse from a sow's ear.
| This is the original "Sea Hag" as she was affectionately known. Here, we have begun to disassemble the car. As you can see, she was a bit rough! | |||
| After taking the car down 100% of the way to bare bones, we had a nice cage installed by a shop that specializes in building stock cars and race trucks. | |||
| Next is the long slow process of stripping all the paint and undercoating off. This is me looking for buried treasure in the form of bondo and rust. Fortunately, I didn't find too many surprises. | |||
