MCATS Mission
MCATS stands in active opposition of plans to build, among other things, the Envotech Resource Center. This center, if built, would become the second largest hazardous waste facility in the United States. We oppose this project for numerous reasons including the facts that:
- The capacity of this facility is not needed to serve the projected needs of the State of Michigan, EPA Region V, and the United States.
- Due to the above fact industrial waste reduction programs are de-emphasized, and waste producers in other countries now import significant fractions of their waste here rather than employ waste reduction strategies for themselves.
- The practice of landfilling hazardous waste has been discredited even by those who are responsible for overseeing such landfill operations for hazardous waste management.
- The importation of hazardous waste over land and water represent additional risks due to accidental and illegal discharges enroute to local facilities.
- Safer alternatives that actually neutralize waste are ignored due to the expediency of these obsolete technologies that merely warehouse them.
- The location of such a facility in the registered wetland in southern Augusta Township makes the dangers of leakage, accidental discharge, ground and surface water contamination, and ecosystem destruciton, all the more severe.
MCATS provides significant outreach and educational material to concerned citizens who wish to learn more about the Envotech plan, hazardous waste management issues, and the political and legislative underpinnings of hazardous waste policy.
