CD Players Result Correct p less than
Sony CDP-707 ESD vs. Phillips CD100 (14-bit) Different 73 / 109 = 67% 0.0005
Sony CDP-707 EST vs. Panasonic SLS-295 (portable) Same 25 / 48 = 52% 0.443

DA Converters Result Correct p less than
Audio Alchemy DDE Version 3.0 vs. Marantz CD-63 Same 20 / 40 = 50% -

The tests were conducted in a same/different protocol.
The Phillips CD-100 was serial number 345, the first CD player in the US and only 14-bit. The Sony CDP-707 uses 18-bit technology while the Panasonic SLS-295 uses 1-bit technology. These tests were published in PSACS Sound Bytes Vol. 7 No. 1 (Oct 96)
The Audio Alchemy DDE Version 3.0 DA converter was driven from the digital outputs of the Marantz CD-63. The same/different comparison was between the DDE's outputs and the Marantz analog outputs, however the analog signal was put through another AD-DA conversion in a Marantz CDR-610 in record mode. This was done for level matching. The comparison was single blind same/different with listeners moved out of the room for cable changes.

Different The different symbol means it is unlikely the percent correct score occurred by chance and thus the null hypothesis was disproven, which substantiates a real difference in sound quality.
Same The same symbol means that it is likely the correct score occurred by chance, the null hypothesis is not rejected, which means no difference was found. It does remain possible a difference may be substantianted with further testing.
